Western Canada

Victoria, British Columbia

Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, is located on Vancouver Island. It is a gentle city and a relaxing place to live in retirement. The downtown area offers many interesting sights and things to do.

A tour of the BC Parliament Buildings is well worth the minimal admission fee. They are located beside the Royal British Columbia Museum, near Victoria Harbour, and on the edge of downtown Victoria, which is home to many souvenir shops and restaurants. Our favourite restaurant there is The Keg Steakhouse & Bar, a Canadian restaurant chain with 95 locations in Canada and 10 in the United States.

Butchart Gardens are a short 30-minute drive from downtown Victoria and well worth the trip. The gardens cover over 22 hectares (55 acres) of breathtaking landscaping. The variety of flowers, flowering shrubs, and trees is truly amazing.

Victoria’s location on the Pacific Ocean makes it an ideal destination for whale watching and other water-based activities. The leisurely pace of life and friendly locals make Victoria a perfect place to relax and recharge during your vacation. If you want to combine city life with nature and history, Victoria is a must-visit spot in Canada.

Vancouver, British Columbia

Vancouver is a modern city on the west coast of Canada. It is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and mountains to the north. City adventures and nature escapes are both available.

Stanley Park is a famous park covering 405 hectares (1,001 acres) in the city’s northwest corner. It has a seawall with a two-lane concrete path, one for walking and the other for biking or rollerblading. To avoid accidents, you must stay on your own path. See the Native-carved totem poles or check out the view across Burrard Inlet to the North Shore mountains.

Vancouver is also famous for its marketplaces, art galleries, and many well-known restaurants. If you want to try food from around the world, Vancouver is the ideal place, offering a wide range of interesting choices. Specifically, check out Granville Island.

The weather is mild most of the year. Although there is a lot of rain in the winter, even on rainy days, the city’s green trees and lovely parks brighten the day. Snowfall varies from one winter to the next; sometimes, there is no snow. This mix of urban life and nature offers something for every traveller. It is only one of the reasons Canada is a good place to vacation.

For nature lovers and adventurers alike, Banff National Park shows the best of Canada’s natural beauty and outdoor fun.

The highway stretching between Banff and Jasper National Park is nature at its finest. You may even get the chance to see a mama bear and her cubs off to the side or running across the road.

Toronto, Ontario

Toronto is the largest city in Canada and a busy financial hub. It has tall skyscrapers, busy streets, and many interesting neighbourhoods. It also has many exciting museums, art galleries, and theatres. The city is home to the famous CN Tower, where you can ride in a glass elevator high in the sky. I took that elevator ride many years ago. It was thrilling but also scary, with only glass beneath me.

The city is also known for its numerous parks and public spaces, where you can relax, feed the pigeons or enjoy a picnic on a sunny day. Because Toronto welcomes people from diverse cultures, it has international restaurants serving a variety of foods from around the world. This mix of modern urban life and multicultural experiences makes Toronto a fun and fascinating vacation destination.

Niagara Falls, Ontario

Niagara Falls is three adjoining waterfalls. Horeshoe Falls, the largest of the three, is on the border between Canada and the United States. The two lesser falls are entirely in the state of New York. Niagara Falls is one of the most famous natural attractions in Canada. This destination is home to massive and powerful waterfalls, attracting millions of visitors annually. The sound of the water rushing over the edge and the mist in the air create a magical and unforgettable experience. Visitors can ride boats near the falls or amble along safe paths near the roaring water.

I recall taking a business trip to Mississauga, a suburb of Toronto, in the mid-1980s. After completing our business, one of the local managers drove us to Niagara Falls, a one-hour and 20-minute drive away. We rode on the Maid of the Mist behind the falls. Even though we were each supplied with a yellow waterproof poncho, everyone still got drenched. Seeing the running mascara on the faces of the women who wore it made me smile. Sadly, the Maid of the Mist stopped operating from the Canadian side of the Falls in 2014.

Parks, restaurants, and fun attractions are also available. Whether travelling alone or with your family, the breathtaking sight of the Falls is a wonderful reminder of nature’s power and beauty. This lively destination shows why Canada is a good choice for a vacation filled with awe and excitement.

Ottawa is perfect for visitors who enjoy learning about history and politics while relaxing in a peaceful urban setting. This exciting mix is one reason why Ottawa is a great vacation destination.

Quebec City, Quebec

Quebec City is one of the oldest cities in North America. Its cobblestone streets, old stone buildings, and charming cafés make it feel like a small town in Europe. The city is well-known for its famous landmark, the Château Frontenac, which looks like a grand castle. Quebec City is brimming with history and culture, making it the perfect place for visitors who enjoy quiet streets filled with stories from the past.

Winter makes the city a magical scene with lights and festive decorations. In the summer, outdoor festivals and street performances bring it to life. For many travellers, Quebec City is a peaceful place to explore history, enjoy tasty French-inspired cuisine, and feel the warmth of the local community.

I’ve always wanted to go to Quebec City. It is very different from Vancouver, where I live now and the prairies where I was born and raised. Perhaps someday.
